Jay Rosen, who I generally respect for his smart stands on important issues, hath tweeteth:

I wish not to alarm or depress you but a noble battle over usage has been lost. The vernacular has spoken. “Blog” has come to mean “post.”

But this time, I feel this is neither an important issue nor a smart stand. I have ben Blogging, on-and-off, since the days it was called Weblogging, and using the word Blog as a verb meaning “to put something into a blog” was always the right way to say it. But as a noun for that something you put into a blog? Horrendous.

YO DUDE I SAW YOU HAD A BLOG SO I PUT A BLOG IN YOUR BLOG…

The problem is that there has never been a generally accepted term to use. Rosen’s preferred “Post” I never warmed to; it seemed ambiguous and rather old-fashioned, especially to the English English language speakers: “a post? couldn’t you find a faster way to put something in your blog than have the postman deliver it?” True, not as horrendous as the noun-form Blog, but not good enough. At MetaFilter, I was more comfortable with the acronym FPP (for Front Page Post) but the man who created that preeminent Community Blog didn’t, and his opposition made sense. What do you call “Posts” to other “pages” of the site: AP for AskPost? MP for MusicPost? TP for TalkPost? Okay, that’s a non-starter.

Other options frequently used still have connotations that are generally “un-bloggy”. “Item” suggests something short and headline-y, even gossipy, and the short stuff has its own word now, “Tweet”. “Article” and “Piece” sound like something only Professional Writers should be allowed to do.

Which is why I am suggesting using the term “Blogging”, as in “Wil Wheaton’s latest blogging…” “In a blogging at The New York Times…” “This is his/her best blogging in months…”

Not perfect, but just knock the “ging” off the end and see how bad it can be… and how bad it IS, being used now.

Like all of my previous sensible suggestions to the Internet, I expect this one to be generally ignored.
